The French Department, young and energetic, was established in 2006, with its first enrollment of undergraduate students started in fall 2007. Its 7 full-time French teachers were all graduated with a master’s degree from different important domestic and foreign universities. Most of them have a wealth of experience of studying, living or working in French-speaking countries. The department enrolls 30 new students each year, normally, a total of 120 students on campus.
Since its establishment, its students’ one-time pass rate for the Level-4 and Level-8 National Examinations for the French Majors has been respectively at or higher than 90% and 80%.
In addition to concentration of their efforts on teaching and learning, its faculties and students, with support of leaders and colleagues from all walks of life, have actively taken part in various social services, and won high opinions. The department now has become a designated trainer of the French language for “the South-South Cooperation” program organized by the Ministry of Agriculture. By the end of June 2017, The French Department has trained 92 agricultural experts for “the South-South Cooperation” and 37 technicians for Anhui Construction Engineering Group, meanwhile, it has trained 193 French undergraduates. Through these social services, the students have got a lot of opportunities to practice, and to improve their professional skills, laying a good foundation for their future employment.
Scientific research has always been an engine for the department’s discipline construction. Despite their busy teaching and social services, the French teachers have made bumper achievements in academic research in their respective fields, having published 30 papers, undertaken 8 research programs on the university level, translated and published 8 academic books, and chaired several provincial French Conference.
The French department, with only 10 years’ construction, has won reputation for its strength in education. Both the teachers and students, taking a broad vision toward the world, are highly passionate in their teaching and learning, which is laying a solid foundation for its development.
